So the Nikon Z6 Mark III that is set to release in later this month, brings several significant upgrades over its predecessor, the Z6 II. With a new sensor and improved auto focusing systems, the camera is aimed at enhancing both still photography and videography capabilities. So here’s a quick overview of the new specs and what to expect
- Sensor and Performance: The Z6 III features a 25 MP full-frame CMOS sensor with a partially stacked design, boosting its speed and performance. It can shoot up to 14 frames per second (fps) with the mechanical shutter and 20 fps with the electronic shutter in full resolution with autofocus tracking. For JPEG files, it offers 60 fps at 24MP resolution and 120 fps at 10MP with a 1.5x crop.
- Viewfinder and Screen: It boasts a high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 5.76 million dots and a brightness of 4000 nits, making it one of Nikon’s brightest EVFs to date. The rear LCD screen is now fully articulated, providing flexibility for various shooting angles and self-recording.
- Autofocus: The autofocus system has been significantly improved, featuring subject detection for people, animals, vehicles, and planes. It also includes Nikon’s 3D-tracking technology and works effectively in very low light conditions, down to -10EV.
- Video Capabilities: The Z6 III excels in video recording, offering internal 12-bit RAW video recording at 60fps in both 6K and 4K resolutions. It supports various codecs, including Nikon’s N-RAW, Apple ProRes RAW, and ProRes 422HQ. Additionally, it can record slow-motion footage in Full HD at 240fps.
- Build and Handling: The design of the Z6 III remains similar to its predecessors, with a few ergonomic improvements such as the repositioning of playback and drive buttons for better accessibility. It is weather-sealed and operates effectively in temperatures as low as -10 °C. The camera includes a full-size HDMI port, microphone and headphone sockets, USB-C, and dual memory card slots (one for UHS-II SD and another for CFexpress Type B/XQD). It uses the familiar EN-EL15c battery.
The Nikon Z6 III is priced at $2,499 for the body alone, with various kit options available that include lenses like the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S, Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S, and Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR. Nikon is positioning the Z6 III as a robust and versatile camera, suitable for both professional photographers and videographers, competing with models like the last year’s Canon EOS R6 II and Sony’s A7 IV.
