We’re in July… Yayyy and quite a lot have happened in the world of photography but if you’ve been too busy to catch up with everything or you’ve been under a rock, in a coma or on internet hiatus (in which case, welcome back) and are just returning, here’s a summary of major everything that’s happened over the last 6 months.
  • Canon released three new cameras spotting the new R mount; Speculations had been circulating all of last year that Canon was going to join the ranks of camera manufacturers that would introduce APS-C sensor mirrorless cameras to their line ups and now they have with the R7 and R10. Both cameras feature a 32-megapixel (R7) and 24-megapixel (R10) sensor respectively. There’s no IBIS system but both shoot 4K video and are targeted at introducing new photographers and existing Canon DSLR shooting into the Canon mirrorless ecosystem. The company also debuted their smallest cinema camera yet; the Canon R5C (C as in Cinema). A camera that is essentially the Canon R5 but with a slightly larger body to accommodate a cooling fan to counteract the overheating problem of the R5.

  • DJI Updates its Entire Fleet; When DJI goes out, they go all out. The company updated their entire fleet of drones and gimbal systems. New Drones include the Mavic Pro 3 which now shoots 5.7K ProRes video on a 4/3 sensor, and the new DJI Enterprise Matrice 30 that’s capable of flying in extreme weather conditions (including under the rain) and can be stationed and flown remotely from anywhere in the world, the new Ronin Stabilizer 3 gimbal system (RS3) with better battery and stronger motors to ensure smoother videos and the most recent DJI Mini 3 that features 4K/60p video, vertical shooting, a new hybrid remote control and obstacle avoidance system in a sub 250-gram body.
  • Action Cameras; GoPro and Insta360 released new action cameras for their audience. The new GoPro 10 and 10 Bones (a stripped-down version of the 10 that doesn’t offer as much protection and is aimed at FPV drone pilots due to its weight) feature a new and improvised sensor while the new Insta360 features a 1-inch sensor that utilizes light better, a collaborative lens with Leica and improves upon older functions.
  • Nikon Releases New Z30 APS-C Mirrorless Camera; The Z30 is a lightweight crop sensor camera with a 20-megapixel sensor camera for shooting 4k/30p video, a fully articulating flip touch screen and a smart tripod that doubles as a remote holder for the camera’s remote controller. Nikon is aiming the Z30 at vloggers and content creators very much like Sony’s ZV E10.

Honourable Mentions;

  • Panasonic released the GH6
  • Arri released the new Alexa 35 Cinema Camera
  • Insta360 released the sphere camera attachment for DJI Mavic Air 2 and Air 2S
  • Profoto released a new 100-watt mini strobe

There’s a lot we didn’t cover in this article (like the slew of lenses that came out from various brands) but you can always catch up with that eventually. The second half of the year is just beginning and there’s a lot we’re expecting so buckle up, be safe and create great imagery.

Cheers!
