At Utsonomiya's Kayabuki Tavern, Japanese macaque Fuku-chan takes off its paper mâché mask during its performance practice with Yume-chan, Mr Otsuka's oldest monkeys. The monkeys have played famous actors and politicians and have appeared on foreign television shows. Following dinner in the tavern, customers have the opportunity to watch the macaques perform tricks on a makeshift stage with the help of a variety of stage props.

The emotions on the monkey’s face, the mask just over his face, the sitting posture… it all comes together to make this image emotionally provoking. Most animals are depicted as devoid of emotions, but it’s images like this that show just how complex animals are too. This image is the overall winner of the 2020 European Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest.
