Morgan Otagburuagu’s striking, experimental imagery celebrates the strength of the Black body and the iridescent beauty of Black skin. Born in 1997 in Abia State, Nigeria, the 24 year old Lagos-based photographer considers art to be a way of life, an attitude that clearly and confidently informs every portrait. He is a master of light whose work is praised by art lovers and professionals alike.
Otagburuagu’s first encounter with photography was in 2017 before turning professional in 2018, initially rising up in the fashion industry and as a coveted portraitist. Today, his varied artwork portfolio ranges between fashion, beauty, still life and videography. His main artistic interest remains the portrayal of Black culture and telling African stories, with a particular focus on African women. Otagburuagu also collaborates with local designers and models to celebrate the environmental beauty of his home country, Nigeria.
Since 2020, Otagburuagu has been represented by UK-based art gallery Doyle Wham and his photographs have been presented in many international exhibitions and art fairs, including at Photo London and Abuja Art Week. His works continually meet with critical acclaim and have been featured in international newspapers and magazines such as Aesthethica, The Times, Afrostyle, Monocle, The Guardian, Afrodysee, Something Curated and The BBC.
