Nengi Nelson is a Visual artist whose mediums of expression are photography and video. Recurring themes in her work are identity, choice, vulnerability and social acceptance.
For her, identity serves a means to introspect and question “being”, beyond social norms especially in African Spaces. She explores choice and how humans decide on who they become, exploring the factors that permit identity in individuals. To further understand self, she explores the role of the community as either an oppressor or liberator of ones Identity. She draws inspiration from personal experiences, music & the mundane.
The now Lagos based documentary and portrait photographer uses her images to explore the human body forms, their emotions and expressions in relation to communication.
Her passion for photography has fueled a few collaborations with other creatives in curating visual content that cut across various platforms. She recently exhibited at the Lagos Photo festival and was published in the African women board 2019 book. Her photographs have been featured on the BBC UK, ATLAS Etihad, Dance gathering, Invisible Borders, alliance etc.
