2026 IS NOT FOR COMFORTABLE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Bayo Omoboriowo became the first personal photographer to a President in Nigeria’s history, he didn’t just get a job he stepped into a role that had never existed before. A young creative from Lagos suddenly found himself in the inner circle of President Muhammadu Buhari, documenting power from angles Nigerians had never seen. He didn’t just get a job, he stepped into a role that carried the weight of history.

For decades, Nigerian leaders had official photographers who only captured staged, formal images. But no one had ever been given full access, day and night, to follow a president like a shadow. Bayo changed that. From dusty campaign grounds to the quiet of the presidential villa, his camera was always ready. He documented moments Nigerians would never have seen. Buhari laughing with children in remote villages, praying quietly before critical decisions, shaking hands with farmers, meeting global leaders behind closed doors.

That is the true power of documenting. A photographer doesn’t just press a button; they freeze moments that might otherwise be forgotten. They tell stories that outlive headlines, governments, and even the people in them. Today, as we look back on Buhari’s years in office, we don’t only remember policies and speeches, we remember images. Those images are Bayo’s legacy. Whether you see them as flattering or neutral, they are now part of Nigeria’s collective memory.

Before Bayo, presidential photography in Nigeria was stiff and distant. His work humanized a leader many thought they knew. Through his lens, we saw Buhari as a man carrying the weight of a nation, not just a figure on a podium. His images remind us that photography isn’t just art, it’s history in motion.

This is why Bayo’s role is so significant: He redefined what it means to document power, he created an archive that will serve journalists, historians, and generations to come and he proved that a photographer can shape how a nation remembers its leaders, whether positively or critically.

WHAT PHOTOGRAPHERS CAN LEARN

1. YOU CAN CREATE A NEW PATH: Bayo didn’t wait for someone to hand him a ready‑made opportunity, he carved out a new space in Nigeria’s creative history. Before him, no one imagined that a president could have a personal photographer documenting everyday life in and out of office. In your creative journey as a creative don’t be afraid to dream beyond the usual. If you see a gap in your industry, fill it. Your career can open doors for others and redefine what’s possible. Do it afraid but do it notwithstanding.

 2. YOUR IMAGES OUTLIVE THE MOMENT: A picture you take today might feel ordinary, but years later it can become priceless. Many of Bayo’s images that seemed like routine presidential updates have now become historic treasures. So treat every assignment with respect. Even the smallest job might one day become part of someone’s legacy or yours.

3. SHOW THE HUMAN SIDE OF YOUR SUBJECT: Bayo didn’t only photograph Buhari as a president; he showed him as a father, a leader, a man with moments of vulnerability and joy. As a creative you need to go beyond the surface. Whether you’re shooting a wedding, a street scene, or a political figure, look for the emotions, the tiny details, the moments that make people feel something that’s where the story is and that’s the story you need to sell.

4. YOUR CAMERA IS A WITNESS, NOT JUST A TOOL :  Photography is not just about pretty pictures; it’s about telling truths and preserving memories. Bayo’s archive is now a witness to history good, bad, and in between. As photographers and creative respect the responsibility that comes with holding a camera, it’s more than taking images , you’re shaping history when told properly. Your images might shape how people remember an era, a person, or an entire movement.

Bayo Omoboriowo was not just holding a camera; he was holding history in his hands. He stepped into a role that had never existed in Nigeria’s history, broke the mold, and gave us images that will outlive speeches, headlines, and even the heated debates about Buhari’s presidency. Every photograph he took is now a window into an era, a heartbeat of a nation, and a reminder that behind power there is humanity, and behind every historic moment there is someone brave enough to document it.

Your lens is not just for today; it is for the future. Your work has the power to shape how people remember. Your courage can open doors for generations to come. Bayo Omoboriowo’s journey shows us what is possible when talent meets purpose and reminds us that photography is not just art, it is legacy.

When history calls, will your camera be ready?
