EXPLORING THE PROS AND CONS OF USING MAGIC LANTERN SOFTWARE

I had just started photography when my friend introduced me to the Magic Lantern software. This is a popular third-party firmware extension for Canon DSLR cameras that opens up your cameras and exposes its true potentials (in rude words jailbreaks/roots) whilst offering additional features and functionalities beyond what the stock firmware provides.

Its a very popular firmware extension and in more than 95% of cases always works but there’s always gotta be that unfortunate 5% that will end up wrecking their cameras trying to install this firmware extension. I use the Canon 6D and have been contemplating installing this for the longest time so I thought we’d explore the pros and cons of using Magic Lantern and if its a decision I should take;

Pros:

•  Expanded Functionality: Magic Lantern unlocks a wide range of advanced features and tools that are not available in the camera’s original firmware. This includes features like focus peaking, zebras, custom histograms, intervalometer, advanced audio controls, and more. These additions provide greater control and flexibility for photographers and videographers.

 

• RAW Video Capability: One of the most notable advantages of Magic Lantern is the ability to shoot in RAW video format. This format retains maximum image quality and allows for extensive post-processing capabilities, giving users greater control over color grading, dynamic range, and fine details in their footage.

 

• Customization Options: Magic Lantern offers extensive customization options, allowing users to tailor the camera settings to their specific needs. This includes customizing button functions, creating scripts for automated tasks, and tweaking various parameters to achieve desired results.

 

• Dual ISO and HDR Video: Magic Lantern introduces features like Dual ISO and HDR video, enabling photographers and videographers to capture high dynamic range scenes with improved details in both shadows and highlights.
