In the previous article about travel photography TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY – Business Of Photography we spoke about travel photography, its benefits to you as a photographer, and ways it can help relate to your audience as well as how to build a story from the image you create. Having known all this, there are few basic and important things you need to get familiar with, whether it is to avoid getting arrested for infringing on people’s rights or just so you can get the best of images.
- STORIES, NOT JUST PHOTOS : A photo should tell a story, create memories and tell a story out of it. Make it relatable to your audience so they can follow and don’t need an interpreter for them to understand the concept of what you’re documenting.
- ASK PERMISSION BEFORE SHOOTING : It is better, and of importance that you talk to the subject and ask for permission before you take their picture, this way you take a better shot instead of sneaking and shooting from afar with a zoom lens.
- COMPOSITION IS IMPORTANT : It is important that you take a moment to consider the framing, angle and exposure triangle before taking a shot. Explore with different angles and properly set your camera to the desired setting so as to get amazing images.
- PREPARATION: Travel photographers should ensure they are fully prepared before going for a travel shoot: ensure the camera is in good condition, extra batteries are available, and check that every other necessary thing needed is gotten because like in most cases, you might not get them at the location.
- RESEARCH : Ensure that you make research about the location, talk to people that know about the place so as not to be ignorant of the life and culture of people in that area. This will enable you to know what to, and what not to do when shooting.
