After bringing flash compatibility to iOS earlier this year, Profoto has now announced that Android phones can now make use of their B10/B10 Plus Strobes as well as the A series speedlights using the AirX Smart-TTL function on their Profoto Camera App currently on the Google Playstore.
The company has been pushing the bounds of lighting and bring strobe light power into the Android photography sphere is bound to be a game-changer. According to Profoto, making its technology work with smartphones was not easy, as smartphone cameras require a much more flexible flash-length on different shutter speeds which in turn made it more difficult to fire the flash at the exact time and duration to light an image. The company claims that it is the only company to successfully bring full power professional flash compatibility to smartphone photography.
The app which is still in its Beta stage is available to everyone, and Profoto encourages its users to send in feedback so they can better the app. According to the company Product Manager Marko Pirc; “We know that for some photographers, the idea of using a smartphone professionally might seem a bit hard to digest. Our philosophy is simply that we want to enable the photographer to choose what camera to use and we are therefore compatible with iOS and Android as well as DSLRs and Mirrorless Cameras from the largest brands.”
The Android Profoto Camera app is currently available for free here on the Google Play store. Profoto also has a patent pending on the AirX Smart-TTL technology that takes advantage of a smartphone’s computational photography methods and balances those with power from its lights but it’s unclear when the company will fully develop that technology.
