While this might be strange to some people, it is not so strange to others; and in case you’re wondering how a camera can add 10 pounds to your natural weight( although this is not an established fact), continue reading as I explain further.
As stated by some professional photographers, the focal length which is the (distance of a focus from the surface of a lens or curved mirror), can make you look heavier or larger. The reason being that there’s an effect called lens distortion which is caused by most wide-angle lenses. Using these lenses inappropriately can cause a person in a picture to look heavier than they appear in the real sense. Using a 24mm lens on your subject, for example, can completely distort the features of your subject.
HOW TO AVOID ADDING 10 POUNDS TO YOUR SUBJECT WHEN USING A WIDE-ANGLE LENS
- Center Your Subject: Always center your subject when shooting close-ups and keep them away off the edges preventing distortion of your subject.
- Use a Greater Focal Range: Using a higher focal length will help deal with the 10 pounds myth. A recommendation of 85mm to 135mm is perfect for especially close-up portraits giving you a nice depth and sharp image.
- Use Creatively: You can use a wide-angle distortion creatively, thereby giving your subject a new perspective.
In addition to what I explained in my second paragraph, http://scishow.com in the YouTube video below describes what it’s like when 10 pounds is added to your subject.
