We usually think as photographers that traveling far away from our locality will bring us great stories. This is partly true but there are great photos waiting to be captured around our locality. We often overlook our environment when it comes to searching for great spaces for photos, but the reality our immediate environment poses the ability to give us great photos.

Here is how you can find great photos locally:

Pay constant attention to your local community; there, you will find a lot of amazing photos and stories. The reason why you may find it difficult to create great photos from your locality is that you don’t allow your photography instinct to come to play.

Familiarize yourself with your community, by doing this you’re getting closer to becoming friends with amazing people within your environment. From them, you will be amazed at the kind of great photos you will find.

Visit the same spot over and over again. So many photographers are used to not taking a picture of the same place, person, thing more than once, but if you keep revisiting that particular spot you will be surprised at the kind of pictures you’d get from that particular spot. Be intentional and have a probity mind with your story, intentionality in this context serves as a guide, you already know what you’re looking for whenever you revisit, it gives you a fresh perspective to each of your pictures.

Give back to these places you’ve been taking your photos, a friend of mine was planning to do a story on agriculture and after liaising with the farmers who agreed to let her photograph them, she went back with a portrait of each of the farmers for them.
