On Monday, Myself and David Ifaola (picturesbyhaniff) went on a location hunt and got into an in-depth conversation about photography, cinematography, and the creative life and he shared with me a hack that I didn’t know was possible (which is saying something because I know most of the hacks out there).
Most motion picture shooters shoot in a flat profile known as Log (For Sony shooters, it’s S-Log, Canon calls theirs C-Log) and what that does is it desaturates the video and makes for better editing of colors and highlights during post-production but the thing is; Log profiles only come in high-end cameras and Cinematic cameras and up until yesterday, I believed the closest you could get to shooting flat images was to shoot on neutral but it is possible to get that smooth, desaturated, cinematic look on your budget DSLR and all you need is a laptop, a USB cable and the EOS utility app provided by Canon.
All you need do is download the CineStyle Profile here, connect your camera to a computer and open up the EOS Utility app (ensure your camera is on manual mode), select picture styles on the computer, and load CineStyle to one of the user def styles then disconnect your camera and change the settings on the camera itself and you are good to go. The picture profile does nothing to your camera (I’ve tried it, hope to share footage at a later date) but you come out with flat-looking footage/images that are great for maximum post-production work.
