Just last week, I was in a fashion editorial shoot with a couple of other photographer friends and right in the middle of the shoot, we switched lenses to get a wider shot and my friend notices a thumbprint on my DSLR mirror and something a little short of hell broke loose with him lecturing me about taking care of my camera and me telling him it was just a smudge and that my sensor was fine but this wasn’t the first time.
DSLR owners would attest to quickly changing lenses for fear of dirt getting on to their sensors and while there’s a mirror present that protects your sensor from direct contact, ‘its better safe than sorry’ and so I delved into Youtube to try to find out how tough a camera sensor is and came across this recent video by Photographer and YouTuber ‘Arthur Reutov‘ where he really digs into a Sony APS-C sensor to show just how tough sensors are now.
While this video shows that sensors can withstand some difficult tests, it’s still important that you treat your camera with care and not go exposing it to extreme conditions without protection, especially for mirrorless camera users. It is important to cover your sensors at all times so they can serve for a much longer period of time.
