It’s not every day that you get a third-stop more of light from the same lens but with a new firmware update, the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 for Sony E mount and Fujifilm can actually go a third stop lower to f/1.6 and whilst that might not be much, for $399 (N174,000) it’s very much worth every penny.
Word is the lens was built originally as an f/1.6 lens but limited to f/1.8 but the firmware update takes away that limitation, allowing the lens to open all the way. YouTuber and Photographer Stefan Malloch in a series of videos on his channel walks the audience on how to install the firmware update and the differences that the upgrade brings to the lens.
In comparison, the Sony 5mm f/1.8 is $598. Viltrox has come out to say that the update isn’t an official update and installation might make void future official updates but outside that, the firmware has been tested and it works.
