Lawyer, 2019 Business of Photography Exhibitor and Proud Mother of Two; Otome Onoge-Kajo is the Lead Creative at Yard 33 Media Ltd, A Visuals Company based out of Calabar Nigeria Sitting with B.O.P, She discusses how she got into photography, her daily struggles and what keeps her going…;
- Kindly Introduce Yourself
I was born in Jos into a family of four, my name is Otome Onoge-Kajo. My parents especially my dad had a great affinity to the arts. So it became a natural progression to have an inclination towards all things artistic.
- What’s your educational background?
I have an LL.B, B.L Law as well as Masters degree in International Affairs and Strategic Studies from the Nigeria Defense Academy
- How did you start Photography?
My photography journey started about 10 years ago when my brother sent me a Nikon camera. It then became an off and on thing I did for extra cash and fun but I decided to actively pursue a carrier in it about three years ago
- Was it just a hobby or did you from the onset want to take it as a career?
Started as a hobby. I was a banker when my brother sent me my first camera as a gift. Instantly fell in love with photography. After a while I figured I was quite good at it and the rest they say is history
- What type of Photography do you do?
I love editorial style photography. I love telling stories and adding visual elements to my work.
- Where/Who do you draw your inspiration from?
My brother who incidentally is a photographer as well has been a major inspiration for me in photography. We talk for hours about photography. Even though our work is entirely different. I defer to him for the most part. I also am drawn to colors, textures and the Nigerian narrative.
- So far what has been your highest point as a photographer and how is the Business of Photography like?
For me getting recognition for my work is always a high. I sometimes battle with creating images I like versus what people seem to like. As a creative it’s easy to develop an imposter syndrome and doubt the authenticity of your work. So when I get some form of true positive feedback, those moments are definite highs.
- What challenges do you face and what steps do you take in overcoming these challenges?
Challenges are endless. The passion is what keeps me going really. Pricing, dealing with clientele who don’t value your work, buying gear, creating a team you can trust, pushing your creative boundaries, getting your voice heard. It’s a never ending struggle. For me it’s about trying to stay consistent, keep pushing and staying true to one’s self.
