Rowland Emelike (commonly known as Rowlandzy) is an Abuja based conceptual artist, Youtuber and Photographer who creates stunning fashion and editorial portraits. In every way, he is an amazing photographer but what’s unique to Rowland is he’s a photography educator on YouTube who uses the Nigerian Pidgin English to reach out to his audience.
The Internet is filled with photography lessons in regular English and other languages so to see a creator localize the lessons so that those who have trouble understanding the jargon can pick up and create images that are incredible and beautiful is amazing.
I caught up with Rowland and asked why he chose to teach photography in pidgin and he said;
“I’ve had one on one classes and I observed that whenever I start using pidgin english, people tend to get more relaxed and understand better so I thought I’d reach out through the YouTube and break down my understanding of photography to the simplest so others that don’t have the opportunity to sit one on one with me can still benefit from this experience.”
