I have been a victim of having a great image and the background destroying the aesthetics of the image. I oblige you whenever you are shooting to pay as much attention to your background as you do to our subject.

The few things that capture the attention of the viewer are basically the subject and background. This does not really apply to portraits or modeling shots but it does with other types of photography, especially when shooting landscape, documentary, street, etc. Pay equal attention to your subject and your background, or else you might miss details in the surroundings that can ruin your composition. Just look at the photo below.

Do you notice the pole in the background, just behind the head of the subject? Once you notice that, it will get on your nerves because it shouldn’t be there in the composition.

Here are few things to do to focus on your background:

Pay close attention to the background: Trying to frame your subject and applying all the rules of composition can make you forget every possible element in the background. You might not know how important this is but over time the background becomes disturbing.

Change in position: Adjusting or change in position can make a difference in your photo. You can avoid any unnecessary background distraction by creating your own perspective say you notice a little tree behind your subject and the position tree is not standing to your advantage when you have to move few distances depending on the closeness it is to your subject in order to avoid distraction.
Avoid unnecessary correction in post-production: Trying to correct errors is time-consuming and requires a lot of effort in post-processing when all can be avoided while shooting by focusing more on your background and less on your subject.
