Last month, Olympus dropped the bombshell news that it was selling its camera business division to the company ‘Japan Industrial Partners’ (JIP). The news came as a shocker to many and even though the company earlier this month, released a road map of future lenses to come, there’s still been an air of uncertainty amongst Olympus users and now, some information on what might happen moving forward has come to light.
According to reports on rumor site 43 Rumors; Starting from sometime in 2021, new products released by the company will not have the ‘Olympus’ brand name on them but will simply be branded as either ‘OMD’ or ‘PEN’ cameras while lenses will be branded as ‘ZUIKO.
Positively, while this means that there will be future cameras and lenses for photographers with investments in the Olympus brand, with the ‘Olympus’ name not behind them, there’s a fear that these upcoming cameras won’t hold up to expectation like what happened when Sony sold their VAIO laptops to same J.I.P company in 2014.
Reports also coming from the site states that other Olympus branches outside of the headquarters in Tokyo were blindsided on the sale, only finding out the same time as the press and the rest of the world.
