In 2018, Canon released their first full frame mirrorless camera and since then, there’ve been 5 different full frame mirrorless cameras and Canon has closed the mirrorless sales gap between them and Sony faster than anyone in the industry could have anticipated but with the success story that’s happening with the EOS R mount, the question on people’s lips is “Would Canon venture in making APS-C cameras with the R mount?”
Earlier today, the Rumor site Canon Rumors just reported that am APS-C sensor R mount mirrorless camera is in the works and would be available in the second half of 2022. The report states that the camera will feature a back side illuminated sensor (BSI) and the sensor will range anything from 25-32 megapixels, much like the 80D/90D Canon APS-C DSLRs.
Producing an APS-C sensor R mount camera bears the question; What will Canon do with its existing M Mount mirrorless APS-C camera line? The M Mount was Canon’s introduction into the mirrorless market with success stories like the M50 and M50 Mark II been top choice for vloggers who are looking for great quality in a very compact form factor. Will Canon cannibalize the M-Mount and roll all those resources into the propose R Mount APS-C branch or will they allow both mount exist side by side?
While this is a rumour, it is important to state that Canon rumours have been right on several occasions before but just to be on the safe side, Canon enthusiast shouldn’t get their hopes too high.
