After 5 years of clamoring and pleading (and development?), Last week, Sony finally announced and launched the a7S III, the successor to the widely popular a7S II. The a7S III is a video-oriented camera that was redesigned from inside out with the promise from Sony that it would be a great video camera with 4K/60p/120p inbuilt and more importantly, NO OVERHEATING or so we thought.
Last month was a great month as all three camera giants (Canon, Nikon, Sony) launched full-frame cameras that fit different niches. Right off the back, the Canon R5 came off with some recording limitations due to overheating and Sony capitalized on that when it was launching its a7S III stating the camera could do 4K/60p without overheating but early testers are stating otherwise.
YouTuber and Cinematographer; Dan Watson in his video compares the Sony a7S III to the Canon R5 and twice (He made two videos) the Sony would overheat and shut down before the Canon R5 did.
There have been multiple tests from different reviewers and some of them have the same results. Indoors at 4K/60p, the a7S III does perform amazing but outdoors, the camera caps at about 28 minutes before shutting down due to overheating while the Canon caps at 33 minutes. It’s yet to assess if the Camera sent to Dan is faulty or if this is something that should be accepted across the board with all a7S III camera and currently, there’s been no word from Sony yet on the issue.
