According to reports on Engadget, it seems Sony wants a share of the drone market as the company just announced its latest project dubbed AirPeck.
Currently, very little is known about what the project will hold but Sony has promised to deliver more information in the spring of 2021 (Between March and May). What is currently known is that Sony hopes to create a competition for Aerial Photography and Cinematography giant DJI. Bringing Sony drones to the market will complement the wide range of Sony gear already available in the market, giving the same color science throughout.
Below is the teaser trailer Sony dropped:
According to Engadget; The consumer drone market is notoriously difficult to penetrate, though. GoPro thought it could take on DJI in 2016, but its Karma quadcopter was a commercial failure. The situation is a little different this time, however. DJI has been caught up in the US government’s growing hostility toward China-made technology. Sony, therefore, might be favored in the West as a Japanese company. Still, it will have to battle the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has made it harder for people to travel and reach spots where they’d like to fly a drone. Hopefully the situation will be better in spring 2021, when Sony plans to formally launch its Airpeak initiative.”
