So Apple held their annual event yesterday and announced the new series of iPhone 13 that will be available for purchase from September 24th, 2021, and whilst there are a couple of minor updates like the introduction of a 120HZ display (finally) on their Pro models, the biggest difference in the new iPhones is the camera looks and added function for photographers and cinematographers.
The physical most noticeable difference comes in the iPhone 13 and 13 mini camera design as the camera is placed adjacent to each other as opposed to right on top of each other as is on the iPhone 11, 12 mini, and 12. The photography aspect does see a little improvement with wider apertures on all cameras but the cameras on all 4 new phones are still peaked at 12 megapixels with slight improvements like the portrait lens going a full 3x zoom instead of the 2.5x in previous models.
The video end though got significant improvements with the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max now capable of shooting video files in 4K ProRes at 30fps. This means filmmakers now have better files to match images/footage shoot on cinema cameras and high-end mirrorless hybrid cameras. The phone also features a new cinematic mood that allows for smoother shifting of focus, peaking all directly from the main camera application.
I’m no phone expert but if you already own an iPhone 12, there’s nothing significantly different here that’s worthy of an upgrade but if you own an iPhone 11 and under, then you can (in my ‘expert opinion’) consider an upgrade.
The iPhone 13 starts at a price of $699 for the 13 mini and peaks at $1099 for the 13 Pro Max (with a lot of in-between prices based on the model you want and its storage capacity).
