It’s not always easy to have your project executed seamlessly, having lots of ideas for a project and executing all can be quite tasking. It is the same with production; putting your thoughts to paper and then having a step-by-step guide to bring those thoughts to life is planning that production. In filming, this is called pre-production. What it does basically, is set things(overall vision) for the project.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PRE-PRODUCTION
- It puts you on the same page with your team: This makes things easier for your crew members. By doing this, they will have a full understanding of what needs to be done when it’s time to shoot.
- Direction on what to shoot: I have heard someone say that she really prefers to explore and think out of the box instead of restricting herself to so much planning. This is true but that having a pre-production plan won’t take away your creative expression; it will just serve as a guide when you’re on set.
So basically there are a few things you need to consider or let me say that there are three layers of pre-production. These layers provide a step by step procedures in which you can execute your idea with whoever is on your team.
- Words
- Image
- Audio
Words/Writing: Literally everything starts with words, this leads you to some kind of research and there, you will find some useful ideas or information that will help prepare you and form the script or questions that would be asked. There’s a photo series I’m working on titled “WILL I SURVIVE” I will definitely share once it’s out. Before jumping into pre-production I wrote down my story and also made some research just to give me an idea and fresh perspective into what to shoot when on set. So basically, you need to have your words written down first just for a clearer picture.
Images/Films: You’re allowed to go into other people’s works as long as you’re not lifting their works but rather drawing knowledge and ideas from them. By so doing, you’re drawing inspiration that can be infused into your creative process.
Audio/Music: Great music will inspire your story and give it more life. Find the perfect music that will serve as a background to your words and images.
I hope you find these useful and please if you have tips that work for your pre-production kindly share in the comments section.
