The nightmare of any drone pilot is to watch their drone crash and even with obstacle avoidance on most drones, there’s still the possibility of human error. This is where the Skydio team has made ridiculously tremendous strides with the release of the Skydio 2.
While giants like DJI dominate the aerial photography and cinematography space, it’s easy to miss companies like Skydio who have put in place future technology like a self flying drone and I kid you not, this drone flies itself. With what Skydio calls the “Skydio Autonomy”, the drone is powered by an A.I that develops a 3D map of the world around it and then judges how best to fly itself whilst keeping track of the subject in frame and I can say after seeing this in action (in a YouTube video might I point out), I can trust in the process.
The drone uses 6 4K camera all around it to provide visuals for the AI and a GPS beacon to actively track a person through whatever scenario. It still comes with a traditional joystick controller and a magnetic battery system that snaps on to the drone. The only down turn to the Skydio 2 is that it isn’t foldable.
There are various price points for the Skydio 2 and they all depend on what accessory you want with your drone. It’s important to note that the sensor on this would’t beat that on the Mavic 2 Pro or Mavic Air 2S (even though they share very similar price points but if you’re someone who’s always on the go and would love to focus on other stuff while your drone follows you, then this drone is perfect for you.
