Sometime in 2022, I spoke with David Joseph, an amazing macro photographer based out of Uyo, Nigeria on his journey into the world of macro photography and how he was able to achieve such amazing images with just his smartphone (click here to read that story). It’s been just over a year since we published that story, David currently shoots with an Olympus camera and his work has grown even better. We caught up with him and he offered to share 7 reasons why others should venture into exploring macro photography as it “can be a rewarding and fascinating endeavor” according to him. He reasons that he following are why more Nigerians should venture into the much unexplored space;
- Discovering the Small World: Macro photography allows you to explore and capture the intricate details of subjects that are often too small to be seen with the naked eye. This can reveal a whole new world of beauty and complexity, from the delicate patterns on an insect’s wings to the tiny hairs on a flower petal.
- Unique Perspectives: Macro photography enables you to showcase subjects from unique and interesting angles. By getting up close and personal with your subjects, you can reveal details and perspectives that are not typically seen in everyday life.
- Scientific and Educational Value: Macro photography is often used in the scientific community to document and study small organisms, plants, and other subjects. It can also be a valuable educational tool, helping people (including you the photographer) gain a deeper understanding of the natural world.
- Technical Skills: Mastering macro photography requires a good understanding of camera settings, focusing techniques, and lighting. It can help you improve your overall photography skills, including your understanding of aperture, depth of field, and exposure.
- Patience and Observation: Macro photography demands patience and a keen eye for observation. You’ll need to pay close attention to details and wait for the right moments, which can enhance your ability to notice the subtleties of the world around you.
- Artistic Expression: Macro photography is a form of artistic expression. Whether you’re capturing the vibrant colors of a butterfly or the textures of a decaying leaf, it allows you to convey emotion and tell a story through your images.
- Therapeutic Benefits: Engaging in macro photography can have therapeutic benefits. It encourages you to slow down, be present in the moment, and connect with nature. This can reduce stress and promote a sense of mindfulness. This is something I share alot on my page.
- The Community: There’s a thriving community of macro photographers who share their work and insights. Joining this community can be a source of inspiration, learning, and connection with like-minded individuals.
Exploring macro photography can open up a world of wonder and creativity. It encourages you to see and appreciate the beauty in the small and often overlooked aspects of the world around you. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or a beginner, macro photography offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity to expand your horizons. Here are some other select images from David’s library;
