It’s August 19th and Photographers world over are celebrating “World Photography Day” and whilst other’s celebrate, its also a good time to take a look at the photography industry in Nigeria.
Living in the world’s most populated black nation, its a completely different story when it comes to photography within the Nigerian borders. Photographers are grossly underpriced without regard for the cost of photography equipments and the photography profession.
Its a Nigerian Photographer’s dream to be paid fair wages because between Planning shoots, executing them and post production, an average Nigerian photographer earns about $14 (NGN 5,000) compared to the cost of an entry level DSLR ($360/NGN 130,000). This isn’t fair, this isn’t just but its the society we currently live in.
Its the dream of the Nigerian photographer to have a united industry that together pushed to break the boundaries limiting her growth and in the process, reshape the Nigerian narrative.
Happy World Photography Day.
