Getting a full-frame camera comes with a whole lot of benefits; there’s the wide 35mm sensor which means you get your focal length equivalent, better low light performance and so on but all of these benefits come at a hefty price and most often than not, most beginner photographers can’t afford that price… until now, *cue in the speed booster*.
A speed booster is an attachment that you mount on to your mirrorless APS-C camera, which in turn tricks your lens into thinking it’s mounted onto a full-frame sensor or put better; acts as a magnifying glass for your sensor, giving you a wider field of view than is possible with a typical APS-C sensor. Third-party companies like Viltrox and MetaBones both have speed boosters and the reviews tell of the wonders that they perform.
Gene Nagata of Potato Jet attaches the Viltrox speed booster to the Canon M50 and does a side by side comparison with the Canon EOS R full-frame camera and the results are surprisingly pleasant. With little interference in auto-focus speed and no image degradation at all, this might just be an option for beginner photographers looking to get the full-frame feel on a budget.
