Miguel Quiles has recently created a crash-course video that explores the different types of backgrounds you can buy as a portrait Photographer. He also explains why collapsible backgrounds could be the best options for you if you are just starting out.
For beginners, Quiles gives a quick outline of all the options available out there. He runs through the basics from seamless paper backdrops to vinyl backdrops, to using V-flats, to custom painted canvas backdrops before he goes on to explains why he concludes-that 5×7′ collapsible backgrounds are the best option for most photographers.
He lists three reasons why Collapsible backgrounds are “the best overall option” for portrait photographers:
- Portability: Bringing a nice backdrop with you on location is a huge plus.
- Easy to Set Up: Unlike seamless paper or canvas backdrops, collapsible backdrops are much faster and easier to set up and swap out during a shoot.
- Compact: Because they’re collapsible, they take up a lot less space in your studio. This is really important if you’re working out of your home, or don’t have a dedicated studio space.
Collapsible backgrounds are not as useful as a seamless, but you still get good results, especially for half-body or headshots. Here are some images that were all shot by using collapsible backdrops made by Savage:
Quiles also shows you,(in the video below), a fast and easy way to fold the large backgrounds.
