As a photographer, it is important to know each part of the camera you handle. Sadly, some photographers do not know the basic parts of a camera asides from the shutter, battery, and battery port. Your camera parts should be one of the first few things you should get to know even before understanding composition, exposure triangle, etc. In this article, I’ll be talking about the basic parts of the camera while explaining the function of each part

  • VIEWFINDER: The viewfinder is a small rectangular opening seen on top of the camera. You can see through it and it helps to compose and frame your shot as a photographer. Cameras either have an optical viewfinder or an electronic viewfinder. The viewfinder also shows parameters like exposure, shutter speed, Aperture, ISO to enable easy access for image capture.
  • SHUTTER: Shutter is used basically to control the time in which the image is exposed to light. It is important to also note that specific cameras have shutter speed also known as shutter count. It is worthy of note that top models of cameras have improved and faster shutter speed
  • SHUTTER TRIGGER: A shutter trigger is a push button that has its own specific function with a dual press option. The first press which is referred to as half click is used to focus on the subject and the second press is used to take the shot.
  • COMMUNICATION PORT: Communication ports are usually on either side of a camera. A USB is the most common type of communication port, present in all models of cameras. It is for image transfer from the camera to the computer. Other communication interfaces include HDMI port, Audio port, Ethernet, Wired remote trigger port.
  • BATTERY COMPARTMENT: The battery compartment which is usually at the bottom or side of the camera is what houses the battery.
  • TRIPOD MOUNT: All digital cameras come with a tripod mount, usually located at the bottom side of a camera, it allows you to mount the camera on the tripod
