I will like to start this article with the definition of a SOFTBOX light. A softbox is an essential part of photography gear that is used to diffuse light to your desired taste. It reduces the harsh shadow, and makes your image or subject look softer when it’s closer to the lightbox. Softbox comes in various shapes and sizes.
A lot of photographers go around with heavy softbox and light when they have work to do; especially event photographers. They go to events with heavy softbox light which makes it more difficult and tedious for them to become more effective during their shoot but with a mini softbox mounted to the mouth of your speedlight, it makes it easier and less stressful to capture moments without the fear of the lighting condition of your environment.
ADVANTAGES OF USING A MINI SOFTBOX
Mini softboxes have a great advantage and are a great way for you to get flawless outdoor portraits and event photography because they are convenient for travel and very easy to move even when you are shooting outside. These small and portable softboxes make it easy to focus your lighting in your direction, especially in outdoor environments.
FLEXIBILITY
Not all softboxes are equal, some are able to diffuse more light, and others are able to regulate how much diffusion is available, depending on your needs. This is one reason to consider buying a softbox with a removable front diffusion panel.
SOFTBOXES SIZES AND SHAPE
You have to choose the size based on the coverage you need for the subject and the quality of light that you’re seeking. You wouldn’t use a 12 x 16″ softbox for a full-length portrait unless you’re doing it for effect, and you wouldn’t use a 54 x 72″ softbox for a head or small product shot. However, there is a quality of light consideration, related to size. It’s advisable that the bigger the light source, the softer the rendering and the wider the beam angle, and therefore, the coverage. Also, the closer you move the softbox to your subject, the softer the wraparound light you get.
