The creative economy in Africa is no longer an emerging conversation; it is a defining force shaping the continent’s future. Across photography, filmmaking, design, digital media, and content creation, African creatives are proving that talent can drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute significantly to economic growth. Yet, while creativity is abundant, building sustainable businesses around that creativity remains one of the industry’s greatest challenges.

Recognising this opportunity, Ananse Centre for Design, in collaboration with the Business of Photography (BOP), is bringing together some of Africa’s leading creative minds for **Beyond the Lens: Building a Creative Enterprise for Africa, a virtual masterclass designed to help creatives think beyond the camera and towards building impactful businesses.

Scheduled for 15 July 2026 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (WAT), the event will convene participants from Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, creating a space where ideas, experiences, and opportunities can be shared across borders.

For many photographers, the journey begins with learning how to create compelling images. However, sustaining a career requires far more than technical excellence. It demands an understanding of branding, positioning, pricing, client management, collaboration, and business development. Beyond the Lens acknowledges this reality by shifting the conversation from simply creating great work to building creative enterprises capable of thriving in today’s competitive landscape.

Whether you are an aspiring photographer, an established creative professional, or someone looking to transition from freelancing into entrepreneurship, the event promises practical insights that extend well beyond the art of image-making. The masterclass features two respected voices who have successfully navigated Africa’s creative industry. Kola Oshalusi, Director of Creative at Insigna Media, has built a reputation for combining creativity with strategic business thinking. His experience across media, branding, and photography positions him uniquely to share insights on building sustainable creative businesses in an evolving marketplace.

Joining him is Prince Raymond Ohemeng, Lead Creative at Chocolate Shot It, whose work reflects the growing influence of African visual storytelling on the global stage. His perspective offers participants an opportunity to understand how creativity, innovation, and consistency can position African creatives for international recognition. Together, these speakers represent different experiences within the creative ecosystem while sharing one common message: creativity becomes truly impactful when supported by sound business principles.

Africa’s creative economy is experiencing unprecedented growth. From advertising and entertainment to digital marketing and commercial photography, demand for high-quality visual content continues to rise. Yet many talented creatives still struggle with pricing their services, attracting premium clients, building strong brands, and scaling beyond individual projects. Events like Beyond the Lens address these challenges by equipping participants with practical knowledge that can transform creative skills into sustainable enterprises.

Beyond learning new strategies, attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with fellow creatives across multiple countries, opening doors to collaborations, partnerships, and fresh perspectives that can inspire future growth. One of the greatest strengths of Africa’s creative industry lies in its diversity. Bringing together professionals from Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa creates an environment where different ideas, cultures, and business approaches intersect.

This cross-border collaboration reflects the future of Africa’s creative economy, where partnerships increasingly transcend geographical boundaries and creative professionals work together to access larger markets and global opportunities. Photography has always been about telling stories. Today, however, the story extends beyond the images themselves. It is about building brands, creating value, solving business problems, and contributing to an industry that continues to shape how Africa is seen around the world.

Beyond the Lens: Building a Creative Enterprise for Africa is more than a masterclass. It is an invitation for creatives to rethink what is possible when talent is paired with strategy, collaboration, and an entrepreneurial mindset. For photographers and creatives who are ready to move beyond simply producing great work and start building lasting businesses, this event offers an opportunity to learn from experienced industry leaders, connect with like-minded professionals, and take the next step towards creating a sustainable creative enterprise. The future of Africa’s creative industry is not only about capturing remarkable moments. It is about building remarkable businesses that will shape the continent’s creative legacy for generations to come.
