Everywhere you go in Nigeria, this is the common phrase of the time. A country struggling with it’s desires for the shiny flash and sleek lines of 21st century modernity, glimpsed through Social media and cable tv, juxtaposed with the reality ‘on ground’ – limited or failing infrastructure and a physical environment totally frayed at the edges.
A city like Lagos has always striven to expand towards the new instead of regenerating the old. In its wake we are left with hollowed out infrastructure, abandoned building and entire industrial zones become eerie dilapidated ghost towns. What ever happened to Tinapa?
We shape our narratives by first understanding our current and past states of mind, documenting our realities to inform the framework of our future dreams. So we can hopefully move from a ‘managed’ state ‘ to a state of ‘considered engagement’
The series asks photographers to document the realities of these spaces left behind, whose empty corridors and broken windows tell the real story of the things we aspire.
Theme: SHAPING THE NIGERIAN NARRATIVE
