Food photography is a still-life photography genre used to create attractive still-life photographs of food. It is also an important genre in commercial photography that sells food brands to your audience. Unlike other genres of photography, food photography involves a number of professionals aside from the photography which includes the cook or food stylist, photographer amongst others. Food photography is becoming quite a popular genre amongst photographers. Hence, the need to understand principles and dynamics to create a beautiful food photograph.
Below, I’ll be talking about a few tips to help better your food photography skills.
- Take photos under natural light. The use of overhead lights or lamps or your built-in flash is not really important in food photography. You must play with your light and make the images look as attractive as possible.
- Move around to find the best light source. Don’t feel confined to taking photos in your kitchen. Perhaps the light is best in your bedroom in the morning. You have to look for an area or space that gives you the best light source so as to achieve great images.
- Try taking photos from multiple angles. Some plates of food look better from above (like, pizza), or from the side (burgers), or at a 45-degree angle (drinks). Try moving around the plate and taking photos at various angles so you can pick your favorite later.
- Minimize clutter. If that spoon, napkin or busy background doesn’t add to the photo, it detracts from the photo. Focus on what is most important, but don’t zoom in so close that viewers can’t tell what the food is.
