For you to get accurate colours, first you need to understand your white balance. White will always appear white except it’s mixed. This will help you take control over how your images look as a beginner in photography. Before I dive straight in, all lights have different colours and there are two different types of light. The natural light and artificial light.
What is white balance? White balance is a setting on a camera and it’s sometimes determined by the camera especially for beginners. White balance is how warm or cool the overall colours in your photograph look. Every camera is pretty good at reproducing colour because it has the ability to analyze the scene and compensate for overly warm or cool colours. In most cases, the auto white balance setting does a decent job of getting accurate colours in images, but it’s not proven yet.
HOW TO ADJUST WHITE BALANCE
Basically, there are mainly two ways of adjusting white balance on your photos:
- Through Your Camera Setting: This requires using a colour preset on your camera although due to differences in camera you will need to consult your camera settings. e.g. Auto white balance(AWB), Daylight/Sunny, Cloudy, Shade, Flash. etc.
- In Post-Production: Another option for adjusting the white balance in your images is to take care of it in post-processing. If you shoot in raw then you will have more control over your editing process. In post-processing, you can access all that data to make preferred adjustments to many aspects of the image, including white balance. Using of editing software like Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. helps you achieve your aim.
