The imaging industry, encompasses more than just cinematography and photography, has seen rapid evolution fuelled by technological advancements, shifting consumer preferences, and competitive innovations. From the rise of mirrorless cameras to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in editing software, professionals in this field are continuously adapting to maintain relevance and market leadership.

This article delves into the past trends of 2023 and 2024, analysing the performance of gear, brands, and market dynamics, while offering actionable insights to excel in 2025. By leveraging business analytics, stakeholder, photographers and creatives alike can optimize strategies to enhance creative outputs, improve audience engagement, and increase profitability.

Below are the trends from previous year that are main pillars in the imaging sector that are key factor you should look into in 2025.

GEAR TRENDS

Gear trends are not just about the tools themselves, they reflect how the world of photography and videography is evolving. By understanding these changes, you can make smarter decisions, whether you’re a creative professional looking to upgrade your equipment or a business owner aiming to create content that connects with your audience.

  • Mirrorless Cameras: Dominated the market with 55% share in 2023, growing to 65% in 2024, driven by superior portability, video capabilities, and rapid innovation.
  • DSLR Cameras: Declined significantly, from 35% in 2023 to 25% in 2024, as professionals and hobbyists transitioned to mirrorless systems.
  • Smartphone Cameras: Captured 10% of market interest in 2024, boosted by advancements in computational photography and accessibility.

BRAND PERFORMANCE

If you’re a photographer, filmmaker, or a business owner who relies on visuals, you’ve probably heard of big camera brands like Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm. These brands are like players in a game, constantly competing to create the best tools for professionals and everyday users. Over the past few years, some brands have gained more popularity, while others have struggled. Here’s a simple breakdown of how they’ve performed and what it means for you in 2025.

  • Sony: Maintained leadership with a 40% market share in 2024, owing to their video-centric mirrorless cameras and innovative full-frame options.
  • Canon: Regained momentum with hybrid cameras, achieving a 35% market share.
  • Fujifilm: Gained a niche following with medium-format systems, growing from 7% in 2023 to 10% in 2024.
  • Nikon: Struggled to maintain market share, dropping to 15% in 2024, due to slower adoption of mirrorless technology.

SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

Building a strong digital presence means understanding the dynamics of social media algorithms and creating content that fits the preferences of each platform. Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter (now X) are critical for engaging your audience. Each platform has unique strengths, trends, and ways to work with its algorithm effectively.

Instagram continues to be one of the most versatile platforms for visual storytelling, particularly with the dominance of Reels, Carousels, and Stories. To maximize your reach, prioritize creating short, engaging videos (Reels) and carousel posts with informative captions.

Consistent posting three to five times per week, along with active engagement such as responding to comments and direct messages, is essential to stay visible on Instagram’s algorithm. To thrive on social media in 2025, there are some general practices that apply across platforms. Video content, particularly short-form videos, is favored universally. Producing high-quality, engaging videos with captions for silent viewing is a smart move. Consistency in posting tells algorithms that your account is active, so maintaining a steady schedule is crucial. Authentic engagement such as replying to comments, messages, and tags makes a big difference, as platforms reward users who actively interact with their audience.

Additionally, staying aware of trending hashtags, sounds, and challenges can boost visibility, especially on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Using each platform’s specific features, such as Instagram Reels or LinkedIn Polls, is another way to work with the algorithms. Finally, analyzing performance through platform analytics can guide you in refining your strategy to achieve better results.

The key takeaway for 2025 is integration. Combine the right gear, brand, and platform strategies to create impactful, high-quality content. Use data analytics to refine your approach and ensure that every effort aligns with audience preferences and market demands. Whether you’re a creator or a business, adaptability and foresight are your greatest tools. The future belongs to those who innovate, connect meaningfully, and leverage the right tools to tell compelling stories.
