Every photographer must have creative skills and the ability to create new ideas and concepts, plan, and eventually actualise that creative idea. How do we stay creative as photographers and ensure we don’t get stuck in a creative rut and feel like none of our ideas is unique?
This article is for every photographer finding it hard to tap into their creative prowess, and the steps below are ways to come out of a creative rut.
- KEEP LEARNING: Reading photography books, watching photography videos, and checking out other photographers’ works online will constantly get you exposed to new things for you to try out. If you read about a particular technique, try it out and adapt it to your style. You might have even created something wholly different and unique to your photography style.
- BE RELAXED: Don’t over-push it; you must think through the process and carefully analyse it. It is difficult to force creativity. If your mind is overstimulated and you try to be creative, you will have trouble creating new concepts. Instead, you need to relax your mind and let the ideas flow. Photographers should take time to do other stuff, listen to music, take a walk or do something different when they’re tense to aid their creative thinking.
- ENJOY THE PROCESS: Don’t be a perfectionist at the first trial, make sure you get the pros and cons right and from there get better at creating it.
