Do you have trouble getting rid of hot spots on your subject’s face? Then this video by David Bergman is for you. In this video, David Bergman puts us through different tricks to apply before and during a photoshoot to help you rid of those shiny patches on your subject’s face. Before we go further, we will explain what hot spot is. A hot spot is that shiny specular highlight that can appear on people’s faces usually from sweat or oil on people’s faces. Please note that this is different from having an over-exposed image. You would normally have those hot spots on the forehead, nose, and cheeks and you need to deal with it. How do you deal with it? Bergman gives a three-fold approach to dealing with hot spots.
The first trick he mentions is lighting. He suggests that you should use different light modifiers in ways that will help you avoid the hot spot whenever possible. The second trick he mentions is makeup: he advises that we should not underestimate the value of a professional makeup artist, however, if you don’t have one on set, then you can have your subject use translucent powder. He also has with him, oil-absorbing paper sheets to help blot out oil from the face of the subject, these oil-absorbing sheets don’t smudge the makeup. The third trick he mentions is in post-processing. To get full the details of these three tricks, watch the video below:
