I’m obsessed with FPV flying, I’ve been obsessed for the last 3-4 years now. The rush of adrenaline, the feeling of flying when you put on the flight googles and the feel of the joystick…. Nothing beats that feeling except you have to build your own FPV and those things crash and explode pretty easily until DJI stepped into the scene.
DJI introduced their first FPV into the market over a year ago and it was a hit but with every first time product, there were observations and room for improvement and those notes birth the new DJI Avata FPV drone.
The Avata is an entry-level FPV drone (even though I wonder if there’s anything like entry-level fpv). The build is well suited for those looking to get into FPV but don’t want to build their own drones and want the added safety nets that are particular to the DJi system of drones like Return to Home, sensors and rugged build.
The Avata features similar processing power to the Mini 3 Pro with a 48-megapixel sensor that delivers the same 4K/60fps but unlike other FPVs, the Avata has propeller guards (CineSwoop style) so you can bump into stuff and not start worrying about replacing your propellers. It features an 18-minute flight battery which compared to other cineswoop drones in this category is pretty impressive. The field of view is equivalent to 12.8 mm unlike the 14.8 mm on the original DJI FPV. It also comes with updated fpv googles that are smaller and have better antennas that improve range and signal reception.
The new drone starts at $629 at launch. The DJI Motion Controller, DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are all compatible with the FPV Drone. As an alternative, DJI offers the Fly Smart Combo, which costs $1,168 and contains both the DJI Motion Controller and the DJI FPV Goggles V2. In contrast, the Pro-View Combo costs $1,388 and includes both the DJI Motion Controller and the DJI Goggles 2. Pre-ordered units will start shipping from August 30.
