So many of us would love to have the macro lens for portraits especially if your kind of photography requires you to, but then, purchasing it might be difficult or expensive. Every photographer using bigger lenses started out with the nifty fifty before owning bigger lenses. The autofocus lens is an ideal choice for portraits and macro subjects. However, 100mm is a great focal length which is good for portraiture on full-frame and offers a pleasing compression of your subject i.e getting a good shape of your subject with no distortion. While f/2.8 isn’t the widest when paired with that focal length, the subject and background separation are superb and the right lens will give you great depth of field, and the attractive bokeh.

http://Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM  Alex Berrera talks extensively about the purchase of the macro lens for portraiture and its advantage.
