Imagine what it would feel like having your work exhibited and a very large gathering of people come to view your amazing work and perhaps you sold almost half of your work and buttered with awesome remarks from the audience. That sounds great, right? The dream of many photographers is to have their work exhibited which brings more joy, in more recent times, not everybody fancies print display in their houses because everything are online. There, you can view millions of pictures to your satisfaction, some photographers don’t even print their own work to share at that moment. However, do not disregard the value of your work as a profession by making it accessible only online because you’ve gone digital.
An exhibition is not an easy task, it requires so much planning from start to finish. If you haven’t done an exhibition before this will definitely sound difficult, to begin with, but, you know that at Business of Photography we are committed to giving you some helpful tips. So I will be sharing some great tips to consider when planning for your exhibition especially if you’re a beginner.
HERE ARE PRACTICAL STEPS TO FOLLOW
- Find a gallery: A gallery is a space where artworks & photo works are hung on display. So basically, you need a gallery where your selected images can be displayed after printing and framing all your work. Most times you need to sign up with the gallery closest to you.
- Have a story: So the major reason why you’re exhibiting is to share and tell the untold stories is to express yourself through your work. Sharing those intimate moments with your audience sparking questions from one image to another. You need to come up with a story theme that captures all the work to be exhibited in one sentence or phrase. This also brings about you getting your work ready from selecting to printing format and framing. This is one part that most photographers get wrong, the format in which you print your images can most times have great implication on the output.
- Create a layout design: The way you arrange your work in the gallery is another very important aspect of an exhibition because they show the way you want the viewer to perceive your images. You have to create a sequence that gives a flow from start to finish. It is advisable to visit the gallery to have a clear view of the gallery and create a layout in which you want the story to go.
- Narrative flow: After creating the necessary layout, you have to create a narrative around your work where everybody can feel the effect of your story. You need to be able to replicate your story in your exhibition.
