I got the SUTE Foto P100 RGB Continuous light a little over a month ago, and I’ve been nothing but impressed at the quality of light, low power consumption and ease of control, all for a little under $300.
So this review will be short and precise, but I hope to be as detailed as I possibly can. The SUTE Foto P100 is a 100-watt continuous light that comes in two versions. There’s the Bi-Color variant that only offers tungsten (Warm) and White (Cool) lighting and the RGB variant that offers the entire colour wheel of colours (that’s the version I got). The light comes in a small carrying bag, alongside a reflector bowl and the power adapter. The light can be battery-powered though by two Sony NP-970 batteries, but you’re going to need a lot of them if you intend to use the light at high intensity for a long period of time (you can opt for a V mount battery as that would last longer but there’s not a lot of places you can find the V-mount battery in Nigeria).
The build is entirely plastic, but it doesn’t feel cheap at all (asides from the tilt control knob, but we’ll get to that). The light features a Bowen mount up front, which means it’s compatible with a lot of light modifiers that would probably be in your gear arsenal.
The light is cooled by a fan built into the light, and for those considering getting the P100 for film-making or a YouTube setup, the fan is almost silent, and there’s next to a zero percent chance that your mic would pick up on it while working even when you’re working at full power. The P100 is also Bluetooth enabled out of the box and, when paired with the custom app (that you have to download from the app store depending on your device), allows you to control almost every function on the light (you can control everything asides physically turning the light off and on).
There are very few downsides to owning the SUTE Foto P100, but like everything, it can’t be all perfect. The hinge that controls the tilting function is made of plastic; hence if you put a heavy softbox or light modifier of some sort, there’s little chance that it’d hold in the position you want. Also, when battery-powered, the light doesn’t go above 80% (for obvious reasons) and doesn’t last very long, but that’s a battery issue rather than a light issue.
Overall, for One Hundred and Thirty Thousand Naira, the SUTE Foto P100 RGB is an amazing product and does serve its function very well. The app is easy to control and allows for multi-light control, so you can have more than one and also control from your smartphone.
