As a photographer, there are basic concepts you need to be familiar with and learn; knowing these terms will aid your knowledge of the craft and help in the productivity of images. Young photographers starting out in photography need to get familiar with these terms to help improve their knowledge about photography which will aid them in shooting amazing images.
Aside from understanding the exposure triangle(ISO, APERTURE, AND SHUTTER SPEED) and camera composition, it is important for photographers to understand other terms in photography a number of which we would be talking about.
- Focal length: Focal length basically means the distance between the convergence of light inside the lens and the point of the sensor where it finally meets. Focal length helps determine the field view of the image- It informs the angle of view and magnification.
- Bokeh: Bokeh is a background effect achieved with the lens aperture and depth of field in the image. Bokeh is created when light is out of focus in an image which is created with a wide aperture which tends to have a beautiful effect on the image
- White balance: White balance is important because it helps balance out the colours of the image. Unlike the eyes that adjust automatically to different light sources, the camera doesn’t do this, hence, using the right white balance setting will help adjust the image and give the desired colour and beauty needed.
- Noise: Noise which is sometimes called grain are flecks that appear on images as a result of increased ISO, so it is best to use low or reduced ISO to prevent noise in your image as a photographer.
