Picture/Photo style in photography refers to the way an image is captured and processed to achieve a certain visual look or aesthetic. It plays a crucial role in conveying the mood, emotions, and story of a photograph. Picture style in photography is a versatile tool that enables photographers to shape their visual narrative, evoke emotions, and create images that resonate with viewers on a deeper level. It’s a powerful aspect of the photographic process that goes beyond simply capturing a scene and delves into the realm of artistic expression and communication.

Many Photographers spend years and time testing an array of style and putting together somewhat of a portfolio before settling on a certain style that they eventually carry on through the rest of their work. Its why legendary works of photographers like Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz, Steve McCurry, etc. are so easily recognized and appreciated today.

Building a style is based of personal feelings and the genre you shoot but here are some key reasons why picture style is important in photography:

1. Aesthetic Expression: Picture styles allow photographers to infuse their personal artistic vision into their work. Different styles can evoke various emotions, moods, and atmospheres. For example, a bright and vibrant style might be used for cheerful and lively scenes, while a muted and desaturated style could create a more somber or nostalgic mood.

2. Storytelling: The chosen picture style can enhance the storytelling aspect of a photograph. For instance, a gritty, high-contrast style might be used for a dramatic and intense scene, while a soft and pastel style could be employed to depict a dreamy or romantic narrative.

3. Consistency: Developing a consistent picture style can help photographers establish a recognizable and cohesive visual identity. This is especially important for professionals or artists looking to create a signature look that distinguishes their work from others.

4. Branding: Picture styles can also be essential for commercial photographers, as they contribute to branding and marketing efforts. A consistent style across a photographer’s portfolio can attract clients who are seeking a particular type of imagery.

5. Emotional Impact: Different picture styles have the power to evoke specific emotional responses from viewers. By selecting a style that resonates with the intended message of the photograph, photographers can enhance the impact of their images on the audience.

6. Subject Enhancement: Certain picture styles can accentuate certain elements within a photograph. For example, a macro shot of a flower might benefit from a soft and ethereal style that emphasizes the delicacy of the petals.

7. Genre Specificity: Different photography genres, such as portrait, landscape, street, and macro, often demand different picture styles to effectively convey the essence of the subject matter. A portrait might require a style that emphasizes skin tones and enhances facial features, while a landscape might benefit from vibrant colors and enhanced contrast.

8. Post-Processing Flexibility: Shooting in a specific picture style can also affect how much latitude a photographer has during post-processing. Some styles might be more forgiving in terms of adjusting exposure, color balance, and other settings after the photo is taken.

9. Cultural and Historical Context: Picture styles can be influenced by cultural and historical contexts. Certain styles might resemble the look of specific film types or periods in photography history, allowing photographers to pay homage to or reinterpret those eras.

10. Artistic Exploration: Experimenting with various picture styles can be a way for photographers to push their creative boundaries, learn new techniques, and grow in their craft.
