The three days masterclass session with Mr Abi Matesun also known as Malekfotofilms was intriguing, where students were taught different things ranging from; The business of photography, how to relate with clients, and how to think and shape their mind as creative among many other things.
The first day of the masterclass was focused on some very crucial details about the craft and art of photography which includes;
- Photographers should make use of the most available gear, and not wait till they get sophisticated gear before they create images.
- A mind-shift for photographers also to see themselves as more than just photographers but as creatives.
- It also opens up the mind of creatives not to trade their time.
- There was also enlightenment on how to shoot, angles, and how best to communicate their thoughts into images as a photographer.
Day Two was also a great time, where our tutor taught us how to build our portfolios and how to communicate with clients, and how important educating and listening to the client can aid your work and help change the narrative of what your pictures would be like. Below are a few of the things we learned on the second day of the masterclass.
-
The importance of regular practices as a photographer. What you practice as a creative becomes a habit, the habit becomes your character and your character becomes the direction of your life.
- How to be methodically about their process as a creative before the day of your shoot.
- The importance of partnership and how it’ll greatly improve your creative process in curating images.
There was also a shoot on the second day of the masterclass to help guide photographers on how to be methodical about their shoot process, the class was divided into three groups and students came up with very beautiful images.
Day Three was also not an exception, students were taught about pricing and how to charge for their craft, and the importance of teamwork and communication. Students learned a lot from the three days session and are grateful to the tutor Mr Abiola Matesun for his time and also to the African Creative Market.
The Business of Photography conference is back and this year’s conference was very different as spanned four days (instead of one as in previous iterations) providing ample opportunity for photographers to network.
See you next year.
