It’s been well over half a decade since Godox released the original V1 (the year was 2019, I remember cause I got one for my birthday) and that little round headed speedlite changed things for me.
The V1 came out right after the Profoto A1 (that Speedlite has gotten 2 upgrades since then) after which the company was slammed with a copyright infringement lawsuit (Profoto lost) but enough history. The new V1Pro still holds up against the original except for a couple new changes.
The round head of the flash still has magnets that are compatible with Godox X magnetic accessories, the battery is still capable of 100 full power shots like the original however, the battery has a new design featuring a USB type C access port for quick charging alongside the regular charger.
Most interesting though is the new Detachable SU-1 Sun Flash that can be attached to the V1 Pro for that extra direct light kick for when you’re photographing events. The SU-1 is most likely a sub 20 watts flash but what most event photographers will agree is that the struggle to keep ambient lighting in photos stable but still get faces lit has been an issue for the longest time and the introduction of the SU-1 sub flash pretty much eliminates this problem.
When a fully power adjustable sub flash is placed on top what is an already established powerful speedlite, it’s not just a gimmick, it becomes innovation.
The V1Pro retails for $330 is now available for almost every hotshoe mount there is asides Leica and Pentax.
