So many of you might wonder what are the differences between the varying camera brands and why photographers turn into cave-people and lose all home-training when you say one brand is better than the other (I’m talking to Nikon shooters. Yes, I call y’all’s name). Seriously though, I took a sample of most of the photographers I know in person and online and got their takes of why they referred one brand to the other and in no particular order (except my bias of course), here’s a listing of various camera brands and what makes them unique;
- Canon;
Canon cameras are known for their incredible camera build and amazing color science (this is what most photographers get the cameras for). Canon’s color science is one that isn’t replicable on any camera hence why it is one of the most loved camera brands in the market plus accessibility of camera accessories is also top on the list of why Canon cameras are unique but the brand does have a tendency to limit the capabilities of their cameras hence why software developers built the Magic Lantern firmware.
- Sony;
Sony is leading on almost all fronts; their cameras in the last decade have been leading in imaging innovation. Their sensors are the best in the market (but that Sony color science is just terrible… at least until recently I hear), the auto focus system is the best in the market. Camera build is somewhat okay on their more premium lineup and the fact that their sensors are industry leading means the images they produce have the most wiggle room in post production. The lenses are ridiculously expensive then and whilst they are third party lenses and adapters, they don’t really perform as well as the on brand lenses unless you go for the top shelf stuff which unsurprisingly brings you back to the issue of EXPENSIVE!.
- Fujifilm;
“Old School brought to life” that’s what most Fujifilm shooters love about their cameras. The fact that Fuji transitioned from making films for SLR cameras to developing sensors meant they carried all of that knowledge and moved into building incredible machines that can emulate old film looks and that is just incredible plus their top line of medium format cameras are amongst the best in the market so…. Just thought to point that out.
- Nikon;
Despite the amount of hate (good spirited might I add), Nikon has some incredible cameras. As one who shot a wedding once with the D850, that camera was smooth. The Nikon colors are famous for rendering brightly saturated greens and whilst their colors are nowhere near Canon’s, they are much better than Sony’s. The Nikon build is similar to cameras but they have the tendency to complicate the simplest processes. The button layout on Nikon DSLRs are a nightmare (something they seems to have corrected in their mirrorless lineup) and their lenses are just a tad expensive but with great third party options.

This survey relates to the Nigerian market so brands like Pentax, Hasselblad, Leica and the likes aren’t represented because there isn’t exactly a market here and if there is and I omitted it, please let me know in the comments below and tell me their peculiarities; I do really want to know.
