Steer Clear of Electronic Equipment

Avoid storing your digital camera next to an electronic device that generates a magnetic field, as long term exposure to a strong magnetic field could damage the camera’s Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) or any other electronic component.

Keep Away From High Humidity

Do not store your digital camera in a damp location as this could damage the camera’s components over time. This could also cause you to have humidity inside the lens which in turn will lead to condensation inside the camera and may in turn ruin your photos while damaging the internal electronics of the camera. You could also over time, end up with mildew inside the camera.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Be careful not to store your camera in a place where it will be subjected to extreme temperature fluctuation. If the storage area is extremely hot it could damage the camera case and if extremely cold, it could damage the LCD.

Stay Away From Sunlight

Avoid storing the camera in a place where the sun will hit it directly for a long period of time. The sun and heat from the sun could ruin the camera case over time.

Protection For the Camera

If you are looking to store the camera for a month or more, then you should consider placing it in a sealed plastic bag with a moisture-absorbing desiccant to provide protection against humidity. Alternatively, you can store the camera inside the camera bag you use to carry the camera all you need to do is ensure it’s in a dry place.

Remove The Battery and Memory Card

If you will not be using your camera for a month or more, it’s a good idea to remove the battery and the memory card from your camera. If it’s a DSLR camera then remove the interchangeable lens and use the camera’s lens cap or guards.

Turn on the Camera

A good idea, (according to some manufacturers ), is to turn on your camera at least once a month to keep the camera’s electronics fresh.
