No matter how difficult it may be to get a zoom lens, you should never shoot with a prime lens at an event especially when the event is made up of a huge crowd and there’re other photographers present. All prime lenses have a fixed focal length which makes it disadvantageous for shooting event photography because it causes one to always change his/her view by moving closer or farther from the subject.
There is a wide range of prime lenses out there but based on my findings and some trials I have made over time, I’ve realised that prime lens will not give you what you desire from a zoom lens at an event because of its limited functionality. True that prime lens possess great features but when it comes to creating magic in event photography, it’s literally useless.
I’m sure you are wondering what lens is appropriate for event photography, especially as a beginner. Well, there so many options for event photography but I’ll simply say a zoom lens.
A zoom lens comes with a more wide range of focal lengths (24-70mm) that allows you to be flexible when shooting and you don’t have to move around like the prime lens. You only need to adjust the ring on the lens to get a closer or wider view of your subject.
Advantages of zoom Lens:
- Using a zoom lens makes you versatile by allowing you to change your focal length without changing your spot often except you need to change your position to get a better angle. You also get to chose from a wide-angle view to telephoto view when needed. The one thing I love about the zoom lens is that it saves you more time unlike the prime lens where you have to switch from one lens to another which causes you to miss great shots.
- You don’t want to move around with your bag filled with lenses when you can use a lens that comprises all of the five prime lenses. The zoom lens is portable for travelers, event photographers, etc. that like to travel light. Try lenses like 70-300mm f/4.5-6 which encompasses features from the prime lenses.
- Cost-effective to acquire than buying all the prime lenses, As a beginner, I would advise that you save up to buy a zoom lens instead of jumping from one prime lens to another because you will spend more on purchasing a prime lens than you would buying a single zoom lens that comprises of all the prime lens.
