Shooting portraits is great when you have a seamless backdrop or a nice background but most times, all isn’t as we want and we have to open the aperture to get some quality Bokeh. The downside to that is more light floods your sensor. To compensate for this, you could always turn up the shutter speed but if you’re shooting with an external flash unit, the question of whether or not it’s HSS compatible then comes up.
High-speed sync (HSS) is a technique that allows you to synchronize your flashlight output with your shutter to properly expose an image. In HSS, the flash lets out multiple bursts of light that sort of paint through the image to compensate for the fast shutter speed. In this video, Daniel Norton of Adorama TV explains HSS, how it works, and using it to shoot portraits.
