Despite dropping the bombshell news that they were exiting the camera business last week, don’t expect Olympus to just up and leave yet as the company just joined the line up of companies to release software that turns their cameras into high definition webcams while also announcing a new lens road map for lenses that are currently in development.
Yesterday, the company released the Olympus OM-D “Webcam Beta Software” for windows and while there’s no word on whether the app will be available for macOS, it is presumed that it is currently in the works and will be released at a later date. The application is available for free download here and is currently compatible with these five cameras (it is expected that the line up will increase in time);
- OM-D E-M1X
- OM-D E-M1
- OM-D E-M1 Mark II
- OM-D E-M1 Mark III
- OM-D E-M5 Mark II
Also, in addition to the software, the company released a road map of lenses that are currently in development with the earliest one; the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25 IS PRO expected to debut in late 2020.
While there’s no possibility of shrugging off that Olympus is leaving the camera business, there’s still a little hope via the presence of this road map that those loyal to the brand would still be catered for in the nearest future.
